All the money spent on the venues etc, instead of being spent making housing affordable....I think people are more angry about that.

Meloni condemns anti-Olympics actions in Milan, calling demonstrators ‘enemies of Italy’
By STEFANIE DAZIO and GRAHAM DUNBAR
Updated 8:38 AM CST, February 8, 2026

MILAN (AP) — Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni condemned recent anti-Olympics protests in Milan and alleged sabotage of train infrastructure, calling those responsible “enemies of Italy and Italians” early Sunday.

The protesters “demonstrate ‘against the Olympics,’ causing these images to end up on televisions around the world. After others cut the railway cables to prevent the trains from leaving,” Meloni said in a statement on Facebook, adding that thousands of Italians are working to keep the Games running smoothly, many of whom are volunteers.

“Solidarity, once again, with the police, the city of Milan, and all those who will see their work undermined by these gangs of criminals,” she said.

Italy’s transport ministry said it has opened a terrorism investigation into the synchronized sabotage of railway lines in northern Italy on Saturday, the first day of the Games.

It is a nice fantasy to hope for the other, but maintaining reality might be a bit more important.

At least about the intersection of state tyranny and capitalism.

At the earlier, larger demonstration, which police said numbered 10,000, people carried cardboard cutouts to represent trees felled to build the new bobsled run in Cortina. A group of dancers performed to beating drums. Music blasted from a truck leading the march, one a profanity-laced anthem against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

From Google:

Political Lineage: Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy, has historical, ideological links to the post-war fascist movement, as the party's roots trace back to the MSI, which was formed by supporters of Mussolini.

Mussolini's Descendants: Rachele Mussolini, granddaughter of the dictator, was a city councillor for Meloni's party but left in September 2024, citing that the party had become "too right-wing".

Positioning: While some critics note ideological similarities in policy, Meloni has sought to distance her party from direct fascism, stating in 2022 that the Italian right has "handed fascism over to history".

Her rhetoric sometimes mimics that of trump's and any nationalist leader. But she seems to be popular enough in Italy.

Its a tough balance for her because although she uses the "nationalist" rhetoric, Italy is in need of foreigners to help with the lack of labour.

From Google as well:

Italy is in significant need of foreign labor, with companies requiring an estimated 617,000 foreign workers between 2025 and 2029 to combat a severe demographic crisis and shrinking, aging workforce. The government has authorized nearly 500,000 new work visas for non-EU citizens for 2026–2028 to fill shortages in agriculture, tourism, and services.
