The Army is grappling with a sudden budget crunch and scrambling to slash training costs across broad swaths of the force, according to internal documents reviewed by ABC News and multiple U.S. officials.
The move is to make up for a shortfall of some $4 billion to $6 billion, according to one of the officials, as the service has drastically expanded its operational footprint at home and abroad.
The cuts, which range from elite schools to unit-level training, have triggered a wave of abrupt cancellations and unusually aggressive spending scrutiny months before the fiscal year ends Sept. 30.
The service's multibillion-dollar shortfall is the product of a widening set of operational demands and rising costs across the force.

Right now, the money is going to Acquisition. Primarily munitions, recomissioning/repairs and other forward support services.
Because that's where the money goes when the shooting starts and the "consumables" start getting consumed.
Modernization Engineering, Quality Assurance, Training and Maintenance services gets pushed to the side, even though training and modernization, along with Quality Assurance is desperately needed.

(8,457 posts)The fact is that capitalism cannot sustain a large modern society, so the government has to collect and redistribute money, in our case funneling it into various useless industries like defense. We pump hundreds of billions of government hand-outs into defense-centric communities every year and pretend that it is not pure socialist government support by convincing ourselves that these useless baubles are needed for "security." It's a lie, of course. Ideologically, we're supposed to "hate" socialism, and, indeed, they seem to hate it more the more they rely on it (military towns, suburbs heavily reliant on military spending, etc.)!

(114 posts)That's a question that the Pentagon hasn't been able to provide a satisfactory answer for in years.
In the last 8 years the Defense Department has failed every audit, and last year the comptroller stated that it would pass an audit by 2028!

(2,369 posts)The military industrial complex has been feeding so hard on the bloated, unmanageable military budget that theres nothing left for actual war fighter training.
Between news like this and Trumps team were more at risk today than we have ever been.
Final note, Trump is such a narcissistic idiot that you know he thinks its his destiny and duty to use a nuclear weapon. And there are no adults around to stop him. Every time I think things cant get worse I remember Trump and the nuclear football.
