(6,344 posts)her revisionist retelling of what went down. Jake Tapper and others reporting on this are being too kind in my opinion.
There has been a lot reported about how the Trumps are enriching themselves, but the Republicans in power who can do something dont seem to care. Therefore we need to change Congress in the midterms and your Mom is not helping with this book!!!!!!!!

(13,584 posts)Jesus Christ, do you remember what a corny lovestruck dweeb he was around McCain? Sucking his medals on camera even, most distasteful. He not once EVER pressed McCain on a tough question or put him on the spot in all the many dozens and dozens of interviews they did, total free throws for McCain to whip out what insipid line his staff wanted that day.
By the end he was acting like a McCain family spokesman instead of a journalist.

(2,108 posts)I love that Jill Biden wrote a book, and her perspective is only revisionist against the version others, with their own agendas, wanted to tell..
Good for her, and good for Hunter for not giving two f*s about what others think. And Hunter is winning over a lot of people in his recent interviews and, yes, his presence on social media.
Good for him and good for Jill (and Joe). They have already paid their dues and dont owe the Democratic Party a thing.. Anyone who bases their vote on Tapper trashing Jill Bidens book was not going to vote for a Democrat anyway.

(6,344 posts)Now every candidate has to answer questions about whether Joe should have dropped out etc. This was not even in the conversation before this book. Tapper wasnt trashing the book he was asking the question should everyone suspend reality and their lying eyes and ears. George Clooney is going to vote Dem no matter what and he knows what he saw and heard. I also have eyes. This is not what we should be talking about.
Trump is breaking every single thing he comes in contact with, the White House, Laws, Norms,
The ocean monitoring system, FEMA, its endless. This should be the only thing we are laser focused on. I am sad for Joe that he gave everything to this country and the people around him failed him by not counseling him to step aside. Now trying to rewrite history? Lying works for the other side because that cult buys anything. Unfortunately our side is the intellectual side and we think for ourselves and use our brains. Joe would not have been capable of being President right now!!

(2,108 posts)Bottom line:
No one cares at this point about the whole Joe Biden debate, no one cares about the rumors that he wasn't competent, the GOP has completely worn that out. Back when that story was in the headlines, people weren't feeling the pain of rising gas costs, the costs of food, the loss of healthcare, an unnecessary war in Iran, etc. That's what people care about now; anything journalists try to stir up about Jill Biden's book is noise.

(53,731 posts)Right now voters don't care about Joe Biden and his debate performance. None of that or Jill Biden's book will influence the midterm elections.

(52,775 posts)He has Biden Derangement Syndrome. It's like someone is paying him to try to tear that family down. We see it so often with the MAGA influencers like Candace Owens. But Tapper must really have a grudge against the Bidens because he is smart enough to know how petty he looks going after them, in lieu of the fact that they are a Mayberry family compared to the sloven greed image that the Trump family fosters.

(292 posts)It must be that gnawing dread of meeting the same fate of numerous journalists, even late night comedians with stronger vertebrae:
Pelley, Rather, Olberman, Colbert and others.
That stoop youre seeing manifested when he appears full station before the unflattering cameras must be the weakening of spinal fortitude not lacking in his more courageous colleagues. Im probably giving him the benefit of the doubt here. Must be the green he likes more than the truth that America doesnt need the likes of him.
Question any exposés emerging from him and his producers desk.

When they don't release, over you go. Looks bad, it's just an aww shit.
The public NEVER offered Joe Biden a hand up. Every slip, gaffe of minor mess up was on the news or late night. I quit Trevor Noah and hated Myers constantly showing the AF-1 slips or Colbert. Comedy giving chump aid and comfort. It helped.
Joe Biden was President, yet the nightly news focused on chump. They never ignored him!
Now we have a douche who if I found lying on the ground I would kick and spit on!
Not my leader.

The GOP was able to get a 34x convicted felon who refused to accept the 2020 election results and incited January 6th elected for President.
Meanwhile, the Dems wouldnt stand by a man who led the US out of COVID, passed more legislation in 4 years than FDR did in his 3-year term (with supermajorities).
Why? Because the GOP coalesced around Trump and backed him unconditionally. Going on every TV show and spouting the same talking points over and over and over. They never wavered.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party leadership did an Al Franken on Joe Biden. Circular firing squad.
I guarantee if Joe Biden had been a GOP candidate, he would have won because of the messaging machine the GOP has.
People can argue whether or not Joe Biden should have run for a second term, but once he has made that decision the party should have had his back. Bad debate or not. Had Trump had the same bad debate the GOP would have been able to convince voters it was actually a masterclass.

(25,752 posts)I must have missed it, but I did hear Dana Bash getting her little digs in. She tried to cast doubt on Jill's version of what she said to Joe after the debate, and basically said that if Jill thought he was having a stroke why didn't they go to the ER?

(8,534 posts)His supposed love for "The Troops" is also a charade.
Moostache
(11,308 posts)Service is appreciated and combat troops are indeed a different breed - but so are police and firemen and first responders to disasters and medical personnel who run into harms way to protect and save others. But all active duty troops are not combat veterans, and not all of them are really good guys at their core. They deserve respect commensurate with their conduct - just like anyone else. I don't get misty eyed and choked up because of a uniform - but by the stories of heroism or bravery from the person wearing that uniform. Just like our flag. I love the symbol because of a deep and abiding love of the core concepts of self-rule and self-determination it represents - NOT the several states or the government itself.
The over-correction into vulgar troop worship following the fall out of the end of the Vietnam War, the plight of many veterans of that conflict and the revisionist history brought on by the Reagan years (with Rambo, and Norris and multiple paramilitary worship films and books) has left me with a life long aversion to stories about the military. I find many of them to be nearly insufferable.
There is a line (one of the only one's spoken by Stallone in the film "First Blood" - which introduced John Rambo to the country and the world... ironically, in the novel, the character of Rambo is killed in the end and the story is more about the tragic end of a Vietnam vet than an indestructible super soldier on a crime spree) where Sly intones:
Colonel Trautman: It's over Johnny. It's over!
Rambo: Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me I didn't ask you! And I did what I had to do to win, for somebody who wouldn't let us win! Then I come back to the world, and I see all those maggots at the airport, protestin' me, spittin', callin' me a baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me?! Huh?! Who are they?! Unless they been me and been there and know what the hell they yellin' about!
Colonel Trautman: It was a bad time for everyone Rambo. It's all in the past now.
Rambo: For you! For me civilian life is nothin'! In the field we had a code of honor. You watch my back I watch yours. Back here there's nothin'!
Col. Trautman: You're the last of an elite group. Don't end it like this.
Rambo: Back there I could fly a gunship, I could drive a tank, I was in charge of million dollar equipment. Back here I can't even hold a job PARKING CARS!!!! UUHHHH!!!!! (Throws M-60 at wall and then slight emotional pause. He drops to the ground in a crouched
In that mini-speech, many people my age cohort (teenagers of the mid-80's) were first exposed to the power of propaganda and the ability to color the past by those who control the present. The Vietnam War and its entire era cannot be distilled (satisfactorily) into a single speech, slogan or idea... yet Hollywood ran with the image of the abused and misunderstood vet, being put down by anti-War protestors as an inherent evil. This was reinforced ad nauseum though the Reagan years and the fall of the Berlin Wall was largely played as capitalism led by America "defeating" communism and Soviet Union era politics.
It took me until the first Gulf War build up to begin to recognize this, and it was all the way to 9/11 and our nation's collectively bungled and evil response to that attack before I fully recognized the BS and propaganda for what it was all along - a control metric for the population and an easy button to push for politicians looking to change the subject at any given moment.
At any rate...I offer thanks and appreciation to all service members - military or civilian - and a special degree of gratitude for those now or previously in combat operations or support; but not carte blanche and not universally without context.

(30,050 posts)They will pressure the public to support of war of the Republican's choice and under Bush anyways they would lecture anti-war protestors to "support our troops" and had yellow ribbons but after they come back they don't care including the Republicans. They try to privatize the VA or as AOC says "Like many public systems, GOP want to rip the battery out + say the whole car doesn't work, so they can sell it for parts," -- https://www.newsweek.com/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-veterans-gop-privatization-va-funding-healthcare-1405375
I wasn't alive yet during the Vietnam war but in my experience as a veteran Republicans will use troops as a political football if they're pushing for war but don't do much for them after they come back.

Look in the mirror people, we dont want to become like the magats who say the media is the problem .This book is in the news and people are going to report on it and take quotes and paragraphs out of it. (133,343 posts)He lost charm as he aged and his gait changed to that of an old man. It did not inspire confidence. Like it or not you have to be attractive to the public when you run for president. A political family should have picked up on that, that he was not the candidate who won the first time.
When my dad died, I put up a recent nursing home picture of him on facebook that had him looking decrepid because all I could see in it was love and someone who had been amazingly kind to me as a kid and amazingly protective of me when life got terribly hard as an adult. It must have been a bad picture of him. Someone complained to my sister, who was not on Facebook, and she told me to take it down. I put uo a picture of him when he was healthier.
No doubt Biden was not decrepid and still was himself but he lost something salient politically and the Bidens and the people close to Joe could not see it. I was particularly taken aback when during an interview, way after the debate, he was asked what if he lost the election? Biden said "we'll then we lose" or something like that. I was so upset for all the people whose lives would be (are being) destroyed by Trump and Biden did not think of Americans or put them first in his answer.
That being said, I have no doubt he could have produced more great policies for America if he had a second term. He may have remained masterful. But he needed to get elected and he failed at inspiring people and his family should have known that.
