(126 posts)and earth doesn't really care if people pay attention or not.
Taking it for granted has a karma-like way of getting around to the reminders

(27,957 posts)Earthquakes are pretty rare in the NYC area. I've felt two over a about a 68 yr span.
Two quick jolts in 24 from a part of NJ quite west and somewhat south of us. The thought of an earthquake didn't even occur to me!
The "funnier" one (? a 3 to 4) because of how our apt building was situated partly on a hill, and how I reacted happened in the '80s. It's "funny" if you want to hear it.
Obviously they are not funny.
While we get some hurricane effects, and even a rare hurricane, someone once said our N'or Easters are supposedly a winter-variety of hurricanes.(I should look that up!)...
It's also quite rare for us to have tornados! We had a few in the mid '00s in the Brooklyn & Queens area and one in rhe NYC/NJ harbor (a water spout) while I lived in Brooklyn- F0 -F1.And one that was in The Bronx into Connecticut.
Being a bit of a weather & geography buff I pay attention to this stuff.
