Defining image' of America? Picture of Black woman surrounded by white supremacist group in DC on July 4 goes viral

‘An instant Pulitzer Prize winning photograph,' actor Wendell Pierce wrote on X

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/patriot-front-dc-protest-viral-photo-b3009291.html

A photo of a Black woman surrounded by members of a white supremacist group on a Washington, D.C., train has gone viral, with several users suggesting it’s the “defining” picture of America today.

The photo, taken on July 4 by Reuters photographer Cheney Orr, depicts a Black woman sitting on a Washington Metro train while surrounded by members of the Patriot Front, a white nationalist group. Hundreds of Patriot Front members marched through Washington Saturday afternoon as the nation celebrated its 250th anniversary.

And now, social media is abuzz with reactions to the photo.

“I feel like the photo of this Black woman surrounded by dozens of masked, anonymous, white nationalists is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time,” Melanie D’Arrigo, executive director of the Campaign for New York Health, wrote on X.

“Your great grandchildren will see this photo in their history books. This is a defining image of the era of American history we live in,” liberal commentator Dean Withers said.

This photo really hit me hard

That the president welcomed them to his celebration. And National Guard troops patrolling the city, guarding the algae-infested Reflecting Pool and arresting people for putting their hands in the water, were too busy to do anything about these masked nazis.

No they won't, if the Republicans have their way. They're already getting rid of historical things they don't like.

(I don’t know how to say that diplomatically and I don't want anyone to take offense.)

I don't support the penalty inflicted on most of them, to be clear, as I don't think most of the were 'involved' in the shooting, but it was not a peaceful protest

The other protesters were sentenced for their involvement in the attack at the Prairieland Detention Center, where "fireworks were set off" and "property was damaged." Prosecutors claimed they were part of an "Antifa cell," and accused them of "attempted murder" and "providing material support to a terrorist group." Two received 50-year sentences for "rioting" and another received 30 years for "possessing political pamphlets" related to the group.

I've ridden the DC Metro (know what t looks like).

Anyway, now that I know it's a bus - it makes it even more chilling bc of Rosa Parks's experience!

And, woah, I've never seen that particular photo (the bottom one) of her on the bus.
The monsters are still with us.

Sadly enough, bravery shouldn’t even enter into it.

The history of failed American democracy and the triumph of the fascist right.

Her ancestors fled to the Federal District to escape slavery; she’s now surrounded by racist thugs carrying the flag flown by those who fought to preserve slavery.

Of course, Patriot Front might recruit a few Blacks who are happy to be servers if they're taken care of.
