I taught AP US History for 15 years, and there is a thing that happens to you after about year 3. You stop seeing photographs as photographs. You start seeing them as documents. You look for the date, the photographer, the composition, the thing the picture is arguing. You do it at the grocery store. You do it scrolling your phone at 11 at night when you should be asleep.

So when the picture from the Washington Metro came across my feed on the 4th of July, a young Black woman sitting alone in a train car, hands in her lap, surrounded on every side by grown men in white face masks and matching khakis, my first thought was not political. My first thought was professional.

I have taught this photograph before.

September 4, 1957. Little Rock, Arkansas. A 15-year-old girl named Elizabeth Eckford, turned away from Central High School by the National Guard, walks alone through a screaming white mob in the crisp white dress she and her mother had sewn for her first day, clutching her schoolbooks. There is a photograph of that morning that I put on the projector every single year for 15 years. I would ask my juniors to look at it for one full minute before anybody spoke. And every year, some kid would eventually say the thing I was waiting for.

Look at their faces. They wanted to be seen.

That is the detail that made 1957 what it was. The mob did not hide. The girl snarling behind Elizabeth’s shoulder was Hazel Bryan, 15 years old herself, a fellow student, and history knows her name precisely because her face was bare. Those people went to church that Sunday. They believed history would agree with them, so they gave history their faces.

The men on that Metro train did not.

I know. I was born in 1944 in a crossroads cotton-picking Mississippi village. When I was 12, the preacher at our Slouthern Baptist church preached a sermon in response to continuing federal efforts to enforce Brown v Board of Education. The preacher said: "The lie that n####r boys should go to school with our little white girls is the vilest lie Satan has put on this earth!!" And the congregation replied: "AMEN!!"

Even at age 12 I was a bit unsettled by that. At age 18 I left Mississippi and never looked back.

I go home occasionally for funerals and have gone for two weddings. Nothing has changed. N.O.T.H.I.N.G.

Also, posting little girls' faces on social media unblurred provides Grok and other unethical AI the raw material for fake CSAM. Don't rule out that Trump's media team had thought of that.

11. Those young men look fit and trim.

It would be hard to find a group like that anywhere outside of a sports team or the military. They were dressed with care and money. There was money and organization behind them. It would not surprise me if they were in fact selected from the military. In any case, their presence is terrorism and hate speech in a physical representation of what 30% consider patriotic and what the rest of us understand is the polar opposite of patriotism.

Patriotism means love for your country and you fellow countrymen. What these men are showing is Jingoism at it's highest form.

She apologized to Eckford in person. This appears to have been a genuine apology and not one of those "I'm sorry I got caught" faux apologies.
