Hunter Biden @HunterBidenWhen I heard about Senator Grahams death last night, the first thing I thought about was not all the things he said and did in service of Donald Trump. I thought of the time before Donald Trump when he was a brother to Senator John McCain.
A time when senators from different parties could fight about politics and still be friends. A time when a conservative Republican from South Carolina could say of my father: If you cant admire Joe Biden as a person, youve got a problem. Hes the nicest person Ive ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created.
That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.
I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.

(70,244 posts)I didn't know that Graham ever said that.
It makes me sad.

(70,244 posts)To me that was the look of a man in turmoil. I think we all can guess what Trump did to him.
Trump is a very evil person.

(1,559 posts)For Joe and his character and his being attacked by all sides.
For Lindsay Graham, a once-honorable man who betrayed his country and himself over what I will always believe was blackmail by Trump.
And for the United States, because "After Trump" will require more effort, more will, more money, more architectural restorations, more DOGE-hit re- hiring, more political conversions, more arrests and punishments, more legal reversals, more justice, more integrity, more courageous elected Democrats and more SCOTUS members to follow Lindsay Graham.....
than the mere word "hope" can cover.

(18,073 posts)That's an amazing way of looking at things. Hunter Biden is really coming into his own.
I love the statement about believing in an America after Trump. I hope there will be a time when, after Trump, politicians can again argue on the floor, shake hands, and go have a beer.

(421 posts)That part of his statement is perplexing to me. Its like jubilant, guffaws with festive friends you just observed ripping the guts out of bunnies while you eat their mothers. Im never so inclined to break bread so readily with folk who think that the deplorable causes and ideals theyre committed to dont matter or have consequences for the rest of us.

(15,532 posts)But, this kind of like Michelle Obama (who is incredible) thing with the "when they go low we go high thing."
This stuff appeals to US, but not to them and not to the muddle headed middle.
The fact is the America that came before DT was what made DT possible.
Decades of right wing gaslighting that was accepted and normalized.
DT did not HAPPEN to us.
He was possible because the conservative hate machine and republican party chipped away at the decency and integrity and the country's adherence to norms.
All he did was more overtly say and do what the traditional politicians didn't have the stomach after they had whipped the base into a mass of brain eating zombie - DT gave them the brains to eat.
And, radically drove the destruction of our democracy even further.
They hole will be WAY deeper if / when he is gone, than it was when he came down the escalator.
This is nice thought, but we are not going back to what we were.
There are way too many forces at work, too many fires burning hot in too many places.

(7,142 posts)The second he became a trumpian ass-kisser is the day all "good" memories of Lady Graham died.
Sorry Hunter. . .he threw whatever good he had in his body away for political power and sucking up. He did it with McCain, he did it with Trump.
Being in love with a memory is what all abused spouses and partners do (male and female since abuse takes many forms). I refuse to be that and no one else should either.
Fuck Lindsay and I hope he rots in hell.

(16,840 posts)Graham consciously decided to participate in a fascist takeover of our democracy. My love of country is glad he can no longer do that.
HE is the one that decided to turn his legacy into shit.
