Spoiler alert:
This refers to the end of the 1961 film starring Charlton Heston.
Resonances with the end of this film keep springing to mind. El Cid was a mediaeval Spanish Christian military leader. Valencia was being besieged by Muslims and he was leading the defence when his death supervened. Word of the the passing of the charismatic El Cid was a devastating blow to the morale of the defending Christians and a boost for the attacking Muslims. Legend has it that his wife Jimena (played by Sophia Loren) ordered that the corpse of El Cid be fitted with armour and set on his horse, Babieca, to bolster the morale of his troops, and put at the head of a thunderous charge.
Sure enough: his lot won.

(1,536 posts)The relevant point here is El Cid's lot, for their own advantage, cynically covered up his death and let on that he was still alive.
