SpaceX to prioritise building self-growing city on moon, Musk says

Source: Reuters

Elon Musk said on Sunday that SpaceX has shifted its focus to building a "self‑growing city" on the moon, which he said could be achieved in less than 10 years.

"That said, SpaceX will also strive to build a Mars city and begin doing so in about 5 to 7 years, but the overriding priority is securing the future of civilization and the Moon is faster," Musk added in an X post.

Musk's comments echo a Wall Street Journal report on Friday, stating that SpaceX has told investors it would prioritise going to the moon first and attempt a trip to Mars at a later time, targeting March 2027 for an uncrewed lunar landing.

Musk's comments come after SpaceX agreed to acquire xAI in a deal that values the rocket and satellite company at $1 trillion and the artificial intelligence outfit at $250 billion.

How is his Tesla Roadster project going? Has he delivered on that?

How did full self-driving work out? Was his choice of sensor type prudent or did he choose an under-powered sensor array as a cost-cutting measure?

What other project goals has he missed? Is SpaceX on track to fulfill its government contracts, or is Musk way behind after burning through the allocated funding without producing much beyond a large amount of space debris that seems mostly to have re-entered the atmosphere?

They should tell Musk to fuck off at least until he starts fulfilling his other obligations. If he has financial difficulties, he can DOGE himself and generate enough money from his assets to self-fund until his obligations are met.

It seems clear that he never really will finish anything and that the citizens of the US and the inhabitants of the world will pay for his extravagant, incomplete dreams.

"For the good of mankind" should not be perverted to "for the good of Elon Musk".

A private landing on the Moon has already been done, last year: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/articles/cx20xnp0957o

Landing a small craft on the Moon should be achievable by SpaceX too. For it to be notable, it ought to be Musk's much bigger 'Starship', which is planned to land NASA astronauts there some time later - and, of course, take them off again. This is the thing that's been having problems getting into Earth orbit, so a controlled landing on the Moon would be a big advance, in just over a year. Getting it to take off again, as the manned version would require, is another step, which looks less likely still.
