Kristi Noem's DHS is demanding priests prove citizenship based on skin color: cardinal

A prominent Catholic leader in the Archdiocese of Chicago is alleging that Department of Homeland Security agents are stopping priests and demanding they prove their citizenship, based solely on the color of their skin.

According to Religion News Service, Cardinal Blase Cupich "made the allegation in a Jan. 17 interview with WTTW, a Chicago PBS affiliate, and in an interview published Friday (Feb. 6) in the U.S. edition of El País, a Spanish newspaper. 'I’ve had some priests who are of a different color being targeted and arrested — stopped — because of their color and asking them to prove that they’re citizens. That’s not America,' Cupich told the PBS affiliate. 'We should not have to live in a country where people have to carry around their documents all the time.'"

Cupich continued, “It brings terror into a city where not just immigrants, but the population, feel as though they’re being terrorized by the ways that these roundups are going. This is really unheard of. That kind of tactic is really fueling the outrage of people, not only because of the murders that we had in Minneapolis, but also because of our experience here.”

President Donald Trump spent months ramping up immigration enforcement in Chicago, despite the fact that crime in the city was plunging before the operation began.

23. I partly grew up in a Ukrainian Catholic church which -back then 1960's- was pretty obscure....

In the sense that Ukraine was part of The Soviet Union, and not a free country that people in general knew of. It just so happened that NY had (may still have) the largest group of U-As in the USA. I'm half 2nd gen Ukrainian American.

Then if my dad was too tired to drive us to that church in the Bronx, we were in Washington Heights; we usually walked about 1/2 mile to the Roman Catholic partly Hispanic church in WH.

I had no idea at first about the "problems" some Christians had with Catholics. The comments (I was only 7 when JFK was elected, 10 when he was assassinated) about him being "the first Catholic President" went over my head back then.

Idk if any of the priests in that RC church were of color. we weren't up front.

Thomas is a rabid Catholic. Gorsuch is a "lapsed" Catholic, or better "a good Catholic gone wrong" Episcopalian (as the saying goes ). Boof boy Kavanaugh is a Catholic and of course "Daddy Roberts" is one.

On the other side, Sotomayor is a "normal" Catholic.

There are now six justices on the right wing who are either practicing Catholics (Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh and Barrett) or were raised Catholic (Neil Gorsuch, now an Episcopalian).

The Catholic justices who subscribe to Opus Dei are John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Amy Coney Barrett. I think Brett Kavanaugh has been leaning that way since being on the court.

And Neil Gorsuch was raised Catholic, and he's probably the one most likely to NOT be Opus Dei, but would, nevertheless, likely not appreciate Noam going after Catholic priests.
