GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham, Roger Wicker blast reports of 60-day ceasefire deal with Iran

Key Senate Republicans are raising concerns about a reported peace deal being negotiated with Iran, arguing it would be a disaster for the United States that would make meaningless the war launched by President Trump nearly three months ago. The rumored 60-day ceasefire with the belief that Iran will ever engage in good faith would be a disaster, Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wrote in a post on social platform X.
He said the effects of the joint military operation between the U.S. and Israel titled Operation Epic Fury would be for naught if the deal as he understood it went forward. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a close ally of President Trump who for years has pushed for U.S. military action against the Iranian regime, said a premature deal could fundamentally shift the balance of power in the Middle East in Irans favor.
If a deal is struck to end the Iranian conflict because it is believed that the Strait of Hormuz cannot be protected from Iranian terrorism and Iran still possesses the capability to destroy major Gulf oil infrastructure, then Iran will be perceived as being a dominate force requiring a diplomatic solution, Graham wrote Saturday in a post on X.
The South Carolina Republican added that such a perception would become a nightmare for Israel over time, questioning the rationale behind the war entirely.

(15,905 posts)HA! The pot calls the kettle black.
Iran DID engage in good faith, then Trump in his first term ripped up the deal Iran negotiated in good faith.
The USA under Trump is less trustworthy than Iran.

(4,533 posts)to surrender nuclear stockpiles, dismantle equipment, close nuclear facilities, or formally agree not to pursue a nuclear weapon, contradicting U.S. claims, per Fars News.
According to the report, all nuclear-related matters would instead be postponed to a 60-day negotiation period following the agreements signing.
Iranian officials reportedly say the U.S. would first need to accept zero upfront nuclear concessions from Iran, unfreeze $100 billion in Iranian assets, end the naval blockade, suspend all oil and petrochemical sanctions during negotiations, pay $270 billion in war reparations, and recognize the Strait of Hormuz under full Iranian sovereignty and control with no U.S. presence and pre-war shipping traffic restored.

(894 posts)dislike the agreement, just sign the thing and get the damn strait open as soon as possible. Already, people around the world are suffering because of its closure, and that suffering is going to get much worse (including starvation) the longer Hormuz stays closed.

(4,533 posts)But make no mistake: these are Irans terms. Our nation emerges humiliated.
1/ A 🧵 on what we know about the deal right now.
2/ The deal is basically this: we give Iran billions to get back to where we were before the war. And reports suggest the deal might codify Irans right to control the Strait.
What a disaster this whole thing was.
