Iran: Trump remarks on Strait of Hormuz 'inconsistent with reality'

Iran is pushing back on parts of a tentative deal being negotiated by the Trump administration that could put an end to the war between the two countries. President Trump on Saturday evening announced the two sides were moving close to a deal. Iranian officials have acknowledged the talks, and have even said there has been progress.
But they are also suggesting major sticking points could prevent a final deal from being reached. The Fars news agency reported Sunday that the agreement would allow Iran to manage the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the worlds oil supply flows. Those shipments have mostly been halted since the war began in March, causing oil and gas prices to skyrocket around the world.
Trump on Saturday said the deal would lead to the Strait of Hormuz being opened, but did not mention Iranian management of the waterway. The Fars news agency, which is linked to Irans government, said Trumps remarks about the Strait of Hormuz were inconsistent with reality.. Fars said that under the terms of the deal, Iran would allow the number of ships passing through the Strait to return to pre-war levels, but that this would not in any way mean free passage through the Strait, as Trump had contended.
President Trump is under enormous pressure to relieve high gas prices in the United States by opening the Strait. Average gas prices in the nation are above $4.50 per gallon, and have ramped-up worries within the Republican Party about this falls midterm elections, where the GOP is seeking to protect its majorities in the House and Senate. Fars reported that the management of the Strait would continue to be a monopoly run by Iran. It also said that Iran had made no commitments on its nuclear program as a result of the talks.

(12,783 posts)The straight at its narrowest is around 30 miles, so 12 miles of it in Iranian waters, 6 in international waters and 12 in Omani waters.
The water is deep right up to the Omani coastline, they should move the channel there and tell iran to f off

(151 posts)You do realize that Iran has zero issues with firing missiles into (or laying mines) anywhere within the strait? The concept of international waters is a convention and not a law of physics.

(151 posts)Thanks to Donald, Iran has taken an unproven threat and made closing the strait a reality. The world economy is threatened by the closure. Iran can choose who pays a toll and who does not. Iran can simply say, "invade us, nuke us, or pound sand." Iran can ask for and get aid from Russia and China. The US has isolated itself from the non-Middle East world. Now, the gulf states are realizing that they picked the wrong side.
Building a canal around the strait would take a decade, enormous resources, and international cooperation. Iran could still attack any site in the region, including the canal construction. The world economy will not wait that long. Donald will have to chicken out, yet again. The deal he gets will be worse (maybe much worse) than what Obama and the world had before Donald tore it up at the beginning of his first term.

(172,516 posts)And crude isn't the only thing transiting that waterway. There are all kinds of other stuff going through there.

(12,783 posts)There's nothing that transits out the gulf that can't go by highway or train or pipeline, that's how it gets to the Gulf in the first place, they can just transit it somewhere else.
