FDA grants emergency approval for over-the-counter drug to treat screwworm in pets
Source: Reuters
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday authorized the emergency use of a generic over-the-counter tablet to treat ââ¬â¹infestations caused by the New World screwworm in dogs and ââ¬Åcats, as the government steps up efforts to contain the parasite.
U.S. officials this month confirmed the first domestic cases of the parasite in more than ââ¬â¹six decades in cattle, a goat and a dog ââ¬â¹in Texas and New Mexico.
New World screwworm is a â fly whose larvae feed on living tissue, entering animals through ââ¬â¹open wounds and burrowing into the flesh.
The agency said nitenpyram tablets, ââ¬â¹a fast-acting treatment, can be used in pets weighing at least two pounds and at least four weeks old, adding that the drug is expected ââ¬â¹to help kill most larvae within hours of the first ââ¬â¹dose.

Of course this is in response to their having gutted the FDA department that was monitoring these diseases.
Just wait to hear the idiot's explanation for his disastrous handling of the government.

(441 posts)he is of a different breed than the rest of us animal life. Perhaps he needs a special witches brew with a little hen-bane and incantations added.

(441 posts)this would be easier to obtain. If too sweet tasting for some, a twist of lemon could be added.
