University of Chicago bans use of phones laptops for law students to curb AI use

Source: ABC 7 Chicago

Beginning this fall, first year law students at the University of Chicago will be banned from using phones, tablets and laptops in class. This is a new policy at the university to curb AI use.

-snip-

Some of the feedback that was received is that the university wants to ensure students learn to think critically, strategically, and independently without relying on artificial intelligence.

The university will teach students AI, but that will be in upper level courses.

Faculty will be able to experiment and develop their own AI policies for elective courses, however phones and laptops will still be banned for test taking.

2. I agree! I'm glad their law school is doing this, but it's terrible that those students have already had

a few years of possibly using AI to avoid thinking and learning.

I teach History for a few US universities online and I’d say 85% of my students tried to get away with it. I also work in a UK law school. All assessments with few exceptions were riven with AI.

12. As long as they can read their own handwriting, that's what matters

Yeah I'm old - I was born in the 1950's - but today's kids are still able to learn if we give them the tools for learning. Maybe they will learn in a different way than we did, but that's OK.

We can't allow them to use cell phones and tablets to cheat and take shortcuts - these aren't learning tools, they are shortcuts. First they have to learn, and the shortcuts can come later.

You want to focus on whether they can write in cursive... here's my suggestion. You can give your nieces and nephews a gift of your knowledge, and have home-schooling type classes and teach them how to write cursive. Make them practice, and make them show you their work. You do it for them, and it's something they will always remember.

6. What if you are recording the lecture? Like blind students often do now.

7. Some of us ban recording devices unless a student has an accommodation.

I don’t allow students to take pictures of the slides, either. I firmly believe the act of writing something down promotes the learning process.

16. I stopped taking notes altogether back in the day.

I found I never once reviewed them. If anything, it distracted me from paying attention while writing. Doing the HW OTOH…that was the game changer for understanding (math).

I do think AI has a place for sure, but one cannot be successful with it if they don’t know the right questions or prompts to give it…which is why one must not use it in college…if one is extremely disciplined, one can do homework truly by themselves and have it be reviewed by AI, but few, if any kids will be capable of being disciplined enough to use it correctly. Similarly, one must learn their multiplication tables before using a calculator.

17. I took notes, and rarely looked at them

I think just the act of writing the notes helps them stick in my memory. So I wrote things down.
But, in those days, there were no laptop computers or portable phones. And, no bug tuition fees.

school without AI.

If they cannot they will flunk out. Like in the olden days.

It’s amazing millions of us managed to get through undergrad and some grad school without any devices at all. And we had to go to the library to do research using books!

We couldn’t even use calculators.

“Resolve to be honest at all events,” Lincoln famously observed. “And if in your own judgment you cannot be an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer.”
