The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsCalled out from work with a massive headache. Now I have a subconjunctival hemorrhage in my left eye.
Hope I'll be all right. I know it's not my blood pressure.
Maybe hanging out with my Loungers will make me feel better...

Bondi's been kicked out, if you need a pleasant thought. It's old news now but worth savoring.

(114,004 posts)Especially if you have had a triggering event like a major coughing spell. Those symptoms secondary to a systemic BP spike would, of course, be very concerning, while the latter might be self-limiting, but you should still probably at least speak with your PCP, especially if you feel ocular pressure or vision changes.
'Hope it is transient and minor, Aristus, but if unsure, please check with PCP or opthalmologist (or both).

(102,873 posts)As a doctor, should know that you should go see a doctor so if you haven't, please do so ASAP.
A problem with your eyes means you should not be doing screen time.
Get better, but also get a second opinion!

(8,386 posts)Overview
A subconjunctival hemorrhage is the bursting of a tiny blood vessel in the protective tissue covering the eye. This clear tissue, called the conjunctiva (kun-JUNK-tih-vuh), covers the white of the eye and lines the eyelids.
A subconjunctival hemorrhage (sub-kun-JUNK-tih-vul HEM-uh-ruj) can be thought of as similar to a bruise, when a blood vessel breaks in skin tissue. When a blood vessel in the conjunctiva bursts, the blood isn't absorbed right away. Instead, it leaks between the conjunctiva and the white of the eye.
Minor trauma may cause a subconjunctival hemorrhage. But even a strong sneeze or cough can cause a blood vessel in the conjunctiva to burst. A subconjunctival hemorrhage may look alarming, but it's usually a harmless condition that doesn't need treatment. It typically disappears within a few days to a few weeks.

(72,206 posts)I still don't know how I got it. No injury to the eye, no coughing or sneezing. No pain. My headache is a little better. But a subconjunctival hemorrhage takes about as long to heal as a bruise.
As with our wonderful Lounge friends here, I've had a few patients come in to the clinic understandably fearful about this condition, which fits the definition of 'looks worse than it is'.
