'Great news for runners': Twin Cities Marathon shift to later in October gets good marks

Runners and followers of road racing in Minnesota struck a consistent chord Tuesday when asked about the news that the Twin Cities Marathon is moving to later in autumn, beginning in 2027: The decision is good for runners and good for the marathon’s brand.

Organizers at Twin Cities in Motion, which puts on the marathon, cited trending warmer weather and its inherent risk to runners for its decision to make the substantial change.

The 2023 marathon was cancelled due to record-setting heat. The last two years also have also been unseasonably warm, tracking with Minnesota climatologists’ determinations that autumn — and especially the transition from September into early October — is getting more summer-like.

Instead of the traditional first Sunday in October, next year’s marathon is Oct. 17, when cooler, more runner-friendly conditions are anticipated, TCM President Dean Orton said. This year’s race on Oct. 4 is unaffected.
