Recall election scheduled for Independence councilman over data center tax breaks
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - Independence voters will decide the fate of a city councilman during a special election scheduled for September 1.
Independence City Council unanimously approved an emergency ordinance to hold the recall election during a meeting on Monday.
The recall effort targets First District Councilman John Perkins. A petition drive to force a recall election gained momentum earlier this year after Perkins voted to approve incentives for the Nebius AI data center project.
Voters behind the recall pointed to that vote, which included a 20-year, 90% tax abatement and authorization of $150 million in bonds — as a major reason behind the recall push. They citing concerns about the long-term impact on the community.
