NCDMV to phase out registration stickers, paper registration cards under new state budget

July 11, 2026
From SamWalkerOBXNews.com

North Carolina drivers will no longer receive annual registration stickers or paper vehicle registration cards beginning later this year under changes included in the new state budget, while a separate transportation law approved by lawmakers makes other changes affecting driver’s licenses, e-bikes and the state ferry system.

The elimination of registration stickers and paper registration cards is included in the more than $34 billion state budget signed into law this week by Gov. Josh Stein.

The budget directs the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles to transition to an electronic vehicle registration system by Oct. 1.

Under the new system, motorists will continue to renew their vehicle registrations annually and pay the required registration fees.

Maybe there is a place to put a code in or something when renewing electronically?

And how will visually impaired and elderly without internet renew?

TY for sharing.

It's automatically transmitted to the DMV electronically from the inspection station. The owner also gets a printout of the inspection then, too.

You can’t get a renewal before you get the inspection. Once you get the inspection, you can pay online, and prior to this change, the DMV would mail you a sticker to put on your license plate.

My concerns are how much education of LEAs is being done to avoid possible unnecessary traffic stops due to "missing" stickers and what about the technology challenged. Who helps them?

Those inspections were the bane of my existence for a while due to an engine light that had nothing to do with emissions or safety.
