Microsoft ends contract with transit provider, triggering layoffs for 287 employees

MV Transportation Inc. filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification on Thursday regarding permanent layoffs of 287 employees in Redmond. The layoffs are slated to start June 30.
The Dallas-based company is one the largest privately owned passenger transportation contracting firms in the country. It partners with over 200 city and county transit services, school districts, universities and corporations, according to its website.
The job cuts will impact Microsoft shuttle employees, according to Art Clemens, president of the Communications Workers of America Local 7800, which represents MV Transportation employees.
Microsoft ended its contract MV Transportation and awarded a new contract to TransWest, Clemens told the Business Journal. The three-year contract had been up for renewal. A spokesperson for MV Transportation confirmed the layoffs, noting the company issued WARN Act notices consistent with its obligation ahead of the end of the contract.
