New election rule puts Pasco and Yakima voting changes under review

YAKIMA, Wash. — Pasco, Yakima and Yakima County now have to get state approval before making changes to election rules.

The new requirement marks the first time those local governments have to seek approval from the attorney general's office before changing voting policies. The process is called preclearance.

State lawmakers passed the requirement this year. They cited each government's history of diluting Latino voting power.

The attorney general's office said the requirement strengthens voting rights protections.
