Partisan gerrymandering special session goes nowhere -- for now

A special session of the Legislature to consider banning partisan gerrymandering came and went Tuesday. But it’s not gone for good.

Democratic Gov. Tony Evers called the session months ago, a move that he’s used on issue after issue to try and force Republicans who run the Legislature to debate his agenda. Republicans typically gavel in and gavel out quickly when the sessions get called. On Tuesday, they didn’t adjourn — they just postponed.

That could leave open a window of opportunity on an issue that has historically seen the two parties at odds. It could mean nothing at all.

The possibility of negotiations on gerrymandering comes as GOP leaders say talks are ongoing about a separate school funding and property tax relief deal that has been in the works for months.
