Commissioners hear request to hand count ballots this election cycle

GREEN RIVER — A Rock Springs resident has requested the Sweetwater County Commission consider hand counting ballots for the midterm elections.

Laura McKee approached the commissioners during their regular meeting on Tuesday, July 7. She claimed the current equipment and programs used to tally and print ballots are outdated and are no longer supported or certified. She said the county remains “locked in old framework” and the old equipment and programs could potentially lead to “a catastrophic security failure.”

The commissioners have the duty and the authority to act — and the people need them to act, she noted.

McKee “respectfully” recommended the county initiate the removal of the county’s outdated election systems and move to hand-counted paper ballots.
