tRrump can't stop trash talking Canada. That may be the reminder we need

But this week he was back, injecting himself into the final days of our federal election campaign. Asked in the Oval Office about auto tariffs on Canada, Trump hesitated for a moment, acknowledging that he really shouldn’t interfere in another country’s election. But then he was off.

The auto tariffs could go up, he said. Or maybe not. He dredged up his old canard about the U.S. “subsidizing” Canada to the tune of $200 billion a year – a claim that has been debunked over and over. He didn’t actually repeat his “51st state” taunt, but he might as well have. If Canada didn’t trade with the U.S., he said, “as (Justin) Trudeau told me, they would cease to exist – which is true, certainly, as a country…. But I have to be honest, as a state it works great.” And on and on.

But now Trump is back, leaving no doubt that his obsession with Canada is still very much alive and whoever emerges as PM next week will be facing a threat like no other Canadian leader has faced in modern times.

Frankly, it’s good that Trump stuck his nose back in. Canadians need to stay angry at the American betrayal, because that’s what it is. There’s a natural temptation to hope the threat will fade and we can go back to something like business as usual. But it’s not going to happen, and if we need frequent reminders of that to keep up our determination to do the hard things that will be necessary to resist, then so be it.

“How many American soldiers are you willing to get killed in order to add a single star to the American flag?”

I fervently hope after Carney wins next week that he moves with all speed in forming a new defence alliance with Europe, including Canada becoming a nuclear power.

nobody would phrase it that way, and Trumpy doesn’t have a real answer to the boots on the ground query. He did state it would be an economic takeover. There is widespread support for Canada expanding its international commercial activity, notably with UK and the EU, and I presume, Mexico. We’ll be doing that anyway, Trumpy just accelerated it.
As for nukes here, I have bad news for you, they’re already here (North Bay, Ont.) but the emplacement is declared US territory. Besides, except for the India-Pakistan powderkeg, it is unthinkable that a nuclear exchange will happen.

The only way Canada becomes the 51st state is through an invasion and occupation by US forces, so the question of how many Americans would die to add a star to the flag is an appropriate one.

Canada could expel the US nukes in Ontario, and deploy warheads under Canadian control, pointed south, to give Trump or any other American mad king pause to reconsider any invasion fantasies.

While it has no more permanently stationed nuclear weapons as of 1984, Canada continues to cooperate with the United States and its nuclear weapons program. Canada allows testing of nuclear weapon delivery systems; nuclear weapon carrying vessels are permitted to visit Canadian ports; and aircraft carrying nuclear warheads are permitted to fly in Canadian airspace with the permission of the Canadian government.[35] There is, however, popular objection to this federal policy. Over 60% of Canadians live in cities or areas designated "Nuclear Weapons Free", reflecting a contemporary disinclination toward nuclear weapons in Canada.[35] Canada also remains under the NATO 'nuclear umbrella'; even after disarming itself in 1984, Canada has maintained support for nuclear armed nations as doing otherwise would be counter to Canadian NATO commitments.[36]

Now that the US has abdicated its role as a peacekeeping nuclear power, Canada and Europe must fill the void.
