the year of the horse
standing alone in the field back to the wind and rain
nuzzling the scraps of grass seeking some sustenance
walls of time do not yield as tighter grows life’s chain
concepts do not come to pass in the land of substance
now the cold causes shivers soft eyes are closed tightly
the ears lie flat yet still aware as the sad moan groans
scents sensed the nose quivers perception shifts slightly
as a dark secret passes prayer is felt deeply in the bones
alive the horse doesn’t think it simply exists and seeks
moment to moment of sensation pain and pleasure mix
if there is water the horse drinks even as hunger shrieks
there is no goal no destination dung smells briars prick
teeth bared as the cold penetrates a breath fogs the air
hooves set as the god designates a death full of despair
