Victor Wembanyama to miss rest of NBA season with blood clot in shoulder

In a stunning setback for the NBA’s brightest young star, San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama will miss the remainder of the regular season because of deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the team said in a statement Thursday.

Wembanyama, 21, competed in his first All-Star Game on Sunday in San Francisco before returning to San Antonio, where he was diagnosed with the blood clot.

The Spurs hope Wembanyama will be ready to return for the start of the 2025-26 season, according to people with knowledge of the situation. Toronto Raptors forward Brandon Ingram and Detroit Pistons guard Ausar Thompson received similar diagnoses in recent years, and both returned to the court after making full recoveries.

Since when is this a thing? It's a very dangerous condition that can lead to a fatal stroke. It usually occurs in people who sit around all the time or fly a lot. Weird.

His story calls to mind reports of a higher than usual incidence of blood clots in healthy young athletes who had recently received their Covid vaccine or booster. Wemby's vaccine status isn't known, but may (or may not) be relevant to his new medical condition.

Here is a summary of the issues from the Yale School of Medicine's public health newsletter. Please read it before you move to delete this comment. This is a question of fact, not opinion.

So I don't discount anything. The article said thrombosis could be caused by the vaccine or the virus.
