Related: About this forumLet's talk about how Trump has everything wrong about NATO.... - Belle of the Ranch
Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about how Trump has everything wrong about NATO.
Trump rambled about NATO because NATO countries didn't agree to support his elective actions. His rhetoric has led to a flood of questions. First, we'll go over what he said and then get to the key questions.
Trump said, "Why would we be there for them if they're not there for us? They weren't there for us. That sounds like a breaking story." Yes, sir. Is that breaking news? I think we just have breaking news. But that's the fact. I've been saying that. Why would we be there for them if they're not there for us? They weren't there for us. We spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year on NATO. Hundreds protecting them and we would have always been there for them. But now based on their actions, I guess we don't have to be, do we?
This really shows that Trump doesn't understand what NATO is, its obligations, or its history. But that will be explained by answering the questions.
First one. Belle, does NATO have an obligation to help us with Iran? No. None at all. The NATO treaty doesn't mean if one country elects somebody who doesn't understand the consequences of his actions and he starts a war that NATO members must join. It's a defensive treaty. It's also geographically limited to when members are attacked on their home soil and specific possessions.
Next question. Belle, Trump sounds like he's ready to pull us out of NATO. Can he do that? No, for a whole bunch of reasons. First, the treaty was ratified by the Senate in the 40s. That presents its own issue. But beyond that, his current Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, spearheaded legislation in 2023 that explicitly prohibits a president from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO without an act of Congress or two-thirds vote from the Senate. He doesn't have the votes.
Down below will be a reading of the NATO treaty. It's less than 10 minutes. When you listen to it, pay particular attention to article 13. It explains how countries leave. They notify us. There is no specific country for us to notify because the people who made this country a superpower, those who made America great knew the US gets more from NATO than it gives.
I know, I know. But we spend more. Of course we do. We maintain an Atlantic and Pacific presence, but we protect them. Our bases are there to maintain force projection capabilities. Additional protection for them is a side effect.
And now that you know NATO's defensive treaty is confined to North America and Europe and the US uses it to position forces so we don't fight on our soil because it was built to act as a unified hedge against the Soviets. Then it evolved into countering Russia.
What does that mean for Trump's claims? He said NATO troops who fought for us in Afghanistan stayed a little back, a little off the front lines. Now that you know the purpose of NATO and that it's a hedge against a US competitor in Europe, it's important to acknowledge that European nations can't stay off the front line because they are the front line for NATO.
If the people who gave you your talking point about percentages of GDP spent never brought this up, they're not giving you the full story and they're doing it on purpose.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.
