OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Two Oklahoma companies are working on a large project in our nation’s capital.

This week, Atoka-based “Exodus Mobile Cleaning” is preparing the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool for a large renovation.

The installation process began on Thursday and is expected to take several days and cost around $1.5 million, Trump announced in an Oval Office press briefing.

President Trump said this week, “American Flag Blue” will be applied, and will cover up the original stone and granite lining the pool.

Another Oklahoma company, Mid-America Coating, is laying down a blue seal before the pool is refilled.

Trump’s reflecting pool spruce-up fails to charm preservationists
The president ordered the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to be coated with a blue liner.

Construction workers in yellow and orange milled about the drained Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Tuesday morning, where a rectangular patch of brilliant blue signaled President Donald Trump’s latest effort to remake the nation’s capital.

Trump last week announced that the reflecting pool — the granite foreground for Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech — would be coated with a commercial-grade liner in a color dubbed “American Flag Blue.” The painted-on material, commonly used in swimming pools, is intended as a lower-cost alternative to major repairs aimed at stopping long-standing leaks.

This from the man who famously had a solid gold toilet installed in his condo, and has tarted up the "Oval Office.” A blue liner…

Trump rebukes female reporter over ‘stupid question’ after Lincoln Memorial drive-by to check out work by his ‘pool guy’
The president announced a project last month to resurface the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial

President Donald Trump and members of his administration made an unusual visit to the Lincoln Memorial on Thursday, driving the presidential motorcade through the empty reflecting pool that the president recently ordered contractors to renovate.

When pressed with questions about why he was focused on an ornamental project when gas prices are soaring because of the Iran war, President Trump castigated ABC News reporter Rachel Scott.

The president claimed the memorial had previously been “disgusting” and that truckloads of trash had been removed since the pool project began last month.

“That’s not what our country is about,” Trump said. “Our country is about beauty, cleanliness, safety, great people. Not a filthy capital. That’s such a stupid question that you asked. We’re fixing up the reflecting pond to the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and you say, ‘Why are you fixing it up?’ Because you can understand dirt maybe better than I can, but I don’t allow it.”

Key Elements for an Effective Garden Reflecting Pool

Regardless of the style, certain key elements are crucial for maximizing the effectiveness and beauty of your reflecting pool:
  • Stillness: The most critical factor for a good reflection is a perfectly still water surface. This means avoiding features like fountains or waterfalls that disturb the water. We design our reflecting pools to minimize ripples, often with slightly deeper outer edges to suppress wave formation.
  • Shallow Depth: Reflecting pools do not need to be very deep. A depth of just 6 to 12 inches (15-31 cm) is sufficient to provide a stunning reflection. This shallow depth also makes them easier to maintain and safer.
  • Color & Depth: A dark bottom is essential for enhancing the mirror-like quality. We often use black pebbles, dark-colored gunite finishes, or specialized dyes to create a deep, reflective surface that truly captures the sky and surroundings. According to Pebble Technology International, black pebbles add a sense of depth and improve reflections.

What is the difference between a pane of glass and a mirror. (Why not hang a pane of glass on your wall?) A mirror has a dark backing layer, to prevent light coming out from beneath the glass, so, all you see is the reflection from the glass. The same goes for a “reflecting pool,” yes, any old pool of still water will reflect light, but when you look at a blue swimming pool, you see the blue (and some reflection.)
