Janet Mills had the support of the party apparatus and she was unable to break out because she was too institutional. This is going to be an election defined by anti-institutional, anti-incumbent sentiment, not scandals or endorsements.
If Sanders' endorsement was enough, solely, to propel Platner to the nomination that says a lot about where our party is and we need to recognize it. Personally, I don't believe Sanders has that level of power within the party, or on the party. I think he providing some kindling to a candidate whose messaging was ripe to take off.
Barring abuse, criminal activity, or legitimate questions of his electability in this cycle I will continue to pseudo-unapologetically support him because Susan Collins must not win.
